couple talk

“i love your shoulders.”
“that’s agastopia.”
“you’ve got to stop with the words.”
“ok, but it’s time for our jentacular meal.”
“i’m warning you.”
“honey, we’re just opposites. it’s syzygy.”

haiku

unwelcome blizzard
heavy snow, unready woods
car stuck in driveway

roaming for pleasure

which animals gallivant?
this one? no, it stotts when i scare it.
this one? no, it hops into a hole.
this one in shorts, with skinny legs,
watching birds through its binoculars,
water bottle on its hip, chewing juicy fruit?
no. it scampers at my roar.

hope against hope

obdurate nature
follows the rules of physics
there are reasons for what happens around us
and to us
no magic
although plenty of mystery
no fate
although plenty of predictability
no predestination
although plenty of  consequences

we hope
we pray
we rationalize
the sun comes up and goes down
time flows
who knows what may happen
surely we’ll be spared
it can’t happen here
it can’t happen to us
history is entertainment

Replaced

“I’m going to replace you,” my wife told me.

“What are you talking about?” I said.

She tossed my suitcase onto our bed.

“You heard me.”

Not, we’ve got to work things out. Not, I’m seeing another man. She said it as if I were a dishwasher.

“I’ve outgrown you,” she said. “I’m ready for someone new.”

“You’ve just replaced the dining room table, your car, and the dog.”

“Yes.”

“So haven’t I given you everything you’ve ever asked for?” I said.

“Yes,” she said. “Please don’t stop now.”
